Natcher (Sultan): Where did it go?

Natcher is a lion belonging to the circus William Zavatta. It has been exploited for many years, serving mainly as a tourist attraction to make the public want to attend the performances of the circus. When the circus arrived in a new community, Natcher was put in a truck to advertise for evening shows and roamed the roads, sometimes accompanied by a lioness whom we called Betty, even though the announcements at the microphone and the music was broadcast at the same time. However, since 2011 it has been banned in France.

Chapter Animals asks to find Natcher :

Natcher is a lion belonging to the circus William Zavatta. It has been exploited for many years, serving mainly as a tourist attraction to make the public want to attend the performances of the circus. When the circus arrived in a new community, Natcher was put in a truck to advertise for evening shows and roamed the roads, sometimes accompanied by a lioness whom we called Betty, even though the announcements at the microphone and the music was broadcast at the same time. However, since 2011 it has been banned in France.

When we heard about Natcher's case for the first time in the summer of 2017, we were outraged. Unfortunately for us, the circus is very discreet. It was almost impossible to find his track and follow him correctly. We did not want to harass the circus staff, we simply wanted Natcher and the lionesses to stop this illegal activity and be entrusted to non-itinerant structures worthy of the name. A lion is not made to live in a truck with loudspeakers above his head.

The same year, an animal welfare association decides to file a complaint against the circus that holds Natcher. This one is then nicknamed Sultan. At that time, the handsome male was only 7 years old. How many years had he been roaming the roads as bait for the children to come to see him with their parents? And as if all this were not enough, the circus did not once installed the relaxation cage - yet also mandatory since 2 011 - during its passage in the city. In any case neither our surveys, nor the photos and videos published via social networks, newspapers or other associations show ...

Time passes, and we find a sanctuary in South Africa ready to take care of Natcher in a hurry. This is an opportunity for us to have a first exchange with the circus. Except that at the same time, the circus is no longer on the roads and when we find his trace, end 2 018, Natcher is no longer there! Is he locked in one of the circus cage trucks, as it was regularly during our previous investigations? No. He is simply not present anymore. As for the lionesses, their appearances are more rare and random. The circus recovers even another male.

At the beginning of 2015, we are more and more worried about his disappearance. Was he sold in another circus? At a zoo? Is he sick? Worse, is he dead? We want to know. In April, following images sent by a sympathizer, we decide to act! We then contact a collective of lawyers specializing in animal law and seek an angle of attack to force the circus to tell us where the lion is. Everything is envisaged, couriers to dialogue, bailiff's report, legal action ... Finally, none of his actions will be done.

This summer, we got an exchange with the circus, via an activist of our association. The latter tells us that the director of the circus assured him that Natcher never belonged to them but belonged to a Parisian circus. This is perhaps true, since it is not uncommon for a circus to hire a trainer for a few seasons ... But the director would have told him later that the lion would never have been present in the circus, despite all the evidence at his expense.

And since, what has changed? Nothing. Natcher is still out and the circus continues its tour with new lions. If the sound parades are no longer present, the cages of relaxation either. In the field of circus fans, more and more enthusiasts ensure that this circus has never put a cage of relaxation. We are not crazy! We ask to know what happened to Natcher and the others. We also ask that the authorities act, since it refuses to put itself in order. The withdrawal of the certificate of capacity and the seizure of the animals must take place in this case. Unless the school decides to get in the right place ... And tell us where Natcher really is so he can be entrusted to a sanctuary.
