Do elephants have their place in circuses? As we know, not a single week goes by without a demonstration taking place in front of one of the many itinerant establishments with non-domestic animals. Do elephants have their place in circuses? As we know, not a single week goes by without a demonstration taking place in front of one of the many itinerant establishments with non-domestic animals. First of all, we wanted to know how many elephants were still present in circus circus French and belonging to a circus or a French trainer. They are seven. Three are African and four are Asian. Nelly and Bridget are at La Piste aux Étoiles ; Meena and Kamala are under the marquees of Arena Production ; Rosa and Bambi are at the Falck circus (now Zavatta and formerly Amar) and the last, Tania, is at the circus of Europe. Another elephant, Baby, still performs shows but no longer roams. A few years ago, there were many more. About fifteen elephants traveled the roads of France.
Among this fifteen elephants, Maya (La Piste d'Or / Piste aux Etoiles) was today in a SafariPark in Italy ; Lechmee (Arena Production), in a monastery in Britain ; Syndha (Alexis Grüss), in an Italian zoo ; Indra (Maximum) at Elefantenhof Platschow, Germany ; Dehli and Sabbah (Pinder), now deceased ... Not to mention elephants who were present on French soil, but who belonged to foreign trainers like Dumba (circus of Paris), now in a Spanish zoo ; Babati, Burma, Jumbo and Siam (Arlette Grüss) have returned with their trainer to Italy ...
So are elephants destined to disappear from circuses in a few years? Many animals have already disappeared from French circuses. This is the case of giraffes, bears, rhinos, panthers and great apes. Hippopotamuses also seem to be disappearing in French circuses since they are only two in France against a dozen 15 years ago. Elephants do not escape the same fate. They are doomed to disappear from French circuses. With the exception of Tania, all the elephants mentioned above are over 40 years old. Some would be over 50 years old. An important age, and ideal, to let elephants end their lives away from homelessness and offer them some stability?
If elephants are doomed to disappear circuses, it's for simple reasons. Firstly, there are only females in the French menageries and the latter have all exceeded the period during which they could reproduce. Male elephants - even more so Africans - tend to be less docile when in rutting season. Few trainers have them. In France, only the African elephant Mambo, belonging to a foreign trainer specialized in African fauna, is, from time to time, on the tracks of circuses and festivals. In addition, the export of elephants is now illegal.

EDIT july 2019 : according to some of our supporters, it seems that rumors are circulating about problems of sight of one of the elephants of Arena Production (Meena and Kamala). This is reminiscent of Lechmee, who, too, was a visually impaired elephant. If this proves to be correct, we believe that it would be immediately time to place it in an adequate and fixed structure. Following these facts, we preferred to go check this same information, and it turns out that we were able to obtain a medical certificate elephants * dating from 13/05/2019 from a veterinarian certifying that the state of health Apparent elephants are good, and that these are fit for transport.
*On this last, Kamala is named Camilla and Meena is named Nina.
